Retaining Wall Construction, Repair, and Replacement

We can build beautiful, functional, retaining walls.

We Build, Repair, and Replace Retaining Walls

Retaining walls are a great addition to any landscape, especially if your property has an existing slope.  Building a retaining wall allows you to reclaim some of that lost space by carving out usable outdoor spaces on sloping ground that would otherwise not be usable.  Retaining walls can hold back earth and soil which helps to create new level areas for the construction of a new landscape bed, a new lawn, a patio or an outdoor cooking area, and more.  Retaining walls can be built using a variety of materials including rock, brick, block, boulders, or even wood.

Why Do You Need Retaining Walls On Your Property?

  • Do you need to prevent soil erosion on your property?
  • Do you have an existing retaining wall that has failed and needs repair or rebuilt?
  • Do you have a sloped property you’d like to landscape?
  • Do you want to create a new outdoor living space?
  • Do you want some raised garden beds around your home or property?

Brummel Lawn & Landscape LLC is a landscaping contractor based out of Blue Springs, MO and serves the Kansas City, Metro area.  We specialize in designing and building functional retaining walls for property owners looking to landscape their naturally sloped property.  The team at Brummel Lawn & Landscape LLC will be able to provide you with a retaining wall solution that will benefit your specific property.

Construction Of New Retaining Walls

We specialize in the construction of new segmented retaining walls.  The benefits to segmented retaining walls are many.  Segmented retaining walls are aesthetically pleasing, they offer design flexibility, they are economical, easier to install, and durable.

When we view your property, we’ll be able to let you know any specific building codes that might apply to your circumstance depending on the height/length of your wall and what it’s specifically being installed for and whatever surcharges (weight) might be applied to the soil above and behind the wall.

Proper Drainage For Retaining Walls

We are often contacted by potential customers who have an existing retaining wall that has failed, it’s either falling down, bulging, or collapsing.  One of the most common reasons for retaining wall failure is that the original wall was built with poor drainage in place.

Retaining walls are designed to hold back earth from erosion.  This also makes them excellent at holding back water too.  The water that builds up behind a retaining wall is referred to in the industry as “hydrostatic pressure” and the external force of the soil or fill held behind your retaining wall coupled with the weight of the water held behind it is often enough to seriously compromise the integrity of your wall which can lead to failures such as bulging and even a total collapse.

Well-built retaining walls must incorporate good drainage if it’s going to last for many years.  Depending on the type of material being used to build your retaining wall there are a variety of ways to integrate sufficient drainage such as lateral drains, French drains, weeping drains, blanket drains and also the use of very granular soil or fill behind the wall can also work to disperse rather than hold the water.

What Materials Do We Use For Retaining Walls?

There are many different materials to build your retaining wall out of.  Below are some of the more popular materials in our area because of their availability.

  • Block retaining walls
  • Natural stone retaining walls
  • Large boulder retaining walls

How Our Retaining Wall Construction Process Works

  1. We start with our initial consultation.
  2. We determine how many feet of retaining wall you need.
  3. We determine the height of the wall and if a building permit or engineer will be required.
  4. We take into account any surcharges (weight) the wall might be exposed to.
  5. We consult with you on the materials you’d like your retaining built with.
  6. We’ll provide you with an accurate written estimate for the work.

The amount of work required to build a retaining wall can vary widely from project to project.  The slope of your property, the amount of earth your retaining wall must hold back and the overall accessibility of your property will all contribute to the final cost.  We’ll be able to offer you an accurate estimate only after a site visit.

Retaining Wall Repair Or Replacement

We specialize in rebuilding retaining walls that have failed and/or collapsed.

Retaining Wall Repairs

It's pretty common for us to get called out to repair an existing retaining wall that has collapsed or failed in some way.  This could be an old wood retaining wall that is rotting away or a block wall that is bulging or on the verge of collapse if it has not collapsed already.

Typically we don't recommend "repairing" retaining walls.  The wall has failed for a reason and that reason is typically poor construction or a poor choice of materials.  When a wall has failed, we will usually recommend tearing the wall out and replacing it for a variety of reasons.  It's the more cost-effective option in most situations.

Rebuilding Failed Retaining Walls

If your existing retaining wall has failed and needs to be replaced it's usually more cost effective to demolish the old wall, remove the materials, re-excavate the site, install a proper base, install drainage, and build the retaining wall properly.

We specialize in rebuilding retaining walls that have failed and would be happy to provide you with a consultation if you have a wall that you believe needs to be replaced.

The duplexes across the street from me are contracted for snow removal. When Brummel cleared their driveways yesterday they piled the snow from their driveways and street in my driveway and across the sidewalk. My HOA was in contact with them about resolving the issue but so far they have done nothing. They came back across the street at 4:30 am after the snow but made no attempt to remove the blockage they made in my driveway. 1/7- I was able to get in contact with Brummel on Tuesday morning and they resolved the issue. They also indicated they updated their map to not that my side entry driveway is across the street from that duplex.

Called Brummel to move and reinstall the irrigation lines from under the patio & retaining wall. Also installed a patio with decorative pavers. They suggested a fire pit would be a great addition to the space. It was such a great idea and went with it. The team was prompt, courtesy, and pleasant. They are true professionals.

I was first introduced to Brummel when I built my home in 2017. They were the landscaper of choice by the builder. I subsequently started using them for sprinkler maintenance. last year I did a major hardscaping project and Brummel was the best overall bid both from a cost and engagement factor. Where others took measurements and gave a bid, Brummel made sure they knew what I wanted, and work did not disappoint. Since then, I have trusted them with my lawncare and trees and shrubs. They don't miss a beat.

Edit: please read the whole review. I have used brummel and lawn for my sprinkler needs for the last almost 5 years now. We've never had a problem until this most recent service where we encountered problems. Mike from Brummel and Lawn went above and beyond our expectations to make things right and fix what was wrong. There were multiple issues with winterizing my sprinkler system and Mike personally addressed these problems via the phone. Mike Then came out additionally to ensure the job was done the correct way by inspecting everything the day after the incident and then later on in the month redoing the job and blew out the whole system again due to the prior problems. Mike ensured everything was done to their company standards of excellence. We really appreciate his commitment to being professional and rectifying our problems. Although we had problems they were right and then some. We really appreciate Mike taking his time and service to the next level to address and resolve our problems and concerns. If you all are looking for a company I'd recommend using Brummel and Lawn. They do good work and if a problem occurs they will make it right.

*Edit* Was going to have them check the sprinkler heads then move onto another company but Ryan from Brummel completely changed my mind. Yes the below issue is repetitive and annoying as hell but the service Brummel offers is honestly worth this headache. He went above and beyond during the visit, thanks Ryan. The work of the on-site techs is great which is why they were recommended to us, we kept using them, and even recommended people in our neighborhood. However, the scheduling service I can't deal with anymore. We called to schedule a blowout AND check sprinkler heads for the year and had to wait months to get in the cue (that's pretty standard as it's a busy season). Once they finally came out, all that was done was the blowout, there was no appointment for checking the sprinkler heads. This exact scenario also happened last year. When I told the person this, her response was "well those are two separate people, the same ones don't do that" well.. That's not my responsibility as the customer to know that and then book another one with that person, that is LITERALLY your job. I the customer state what services I need and you book them, how hard is that? Her tone of "oh well" was more than I could handle today so this will be the last year with Brummel unfortunately. If you can get them on-site they are great just make sure you repeat and confirm every single service you need with the scheduling service or they'll schedule one and ignore the rest.
